We offered each other feedback on our scene rewrites in which we took on a different perspective for a scene from early in our novels. After reviewing that feedback, we rewrote a second scene from later in the novel. Miss Gratton and Mr.Chadburn provided the feedback this time and we will make final revisions to these rewrites on Monday. We also spent some time discussing implicit bias and how we can identify, acknowledge and hopefully avoid it as often as possible.
Next week, we will begin our next unit, Global Read Aloud. We will be reading the novel Refugee, discussing reasons why people are forced from their homes, and collaborating with a classroom in Maine throughout the process!
During our whole group time, we continued exploring our theme of Community by looking at rules of membership and exclusion within communities. We watched a film adaptation of Dr. Seuss's "The Sneetches" and answered questions about how rules of membership impacted the characters and their community. While answering those questions, we also took the opportunity to put some of our workshop writing skills into practice! We will return to these written answers next week and revise them based on observations we were able to make as we reviewed them in small groups.
